Formula Drift: Atlanta

With my new found freedom of working freelance, I spontaneously bought AirTran plane tickets at 2am to go to the Formula D: Atlanta event. No hotel necessary, my old friends at S3 Magazine and new friends at Keep Drifting Fun provided a couch (or floor) to sleep on.

BIG thanks to UrbanRacer.com for getting me media access. Shamefully I spent most of my time having a few Yuenglings in the paddock area, but hell I was mainly here to have fun. On to the pics:

I have this foot thing I’m working on… trust me it’ll be cool. But this shows where I was shooting for most of these pics.

One of my favorite shots; 2009 Champion Chris Forsberg leading 2004 and 2006 Champion Samuel Hübinette around the horseshoe.

Forsberg ripping around the horseshoe again.

Ryan Tuerck blowing smoke in my face. Thanks

Ross Petty smokin’ around the horseshoe. One of my favorite cars of the crowd.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. showboating for the crowd. The sound of this mustang’s V8 almost makes me want to buy one… almost.

Dai Yoshiahra against Chris Forsberg in the semi-finals.

Close-up of how beat-up these cars can get over 2 brutal days of drifting.

The big weiner; Dai Yoshihara. A crowd favorite.

Formula D has been around for nearly a decade, and the sport of drifting much longer. It’s one of the few motorsports where I see absolutely everyone associated with the sport having fun. Any attitudes that flare up over an unethical bump or crash is dissipated as quickly as the smoke just made. Drifting was founded on having fun, and when the sun goes down and cars are trailored away it will still be based on fun. Long live drifting. :)

Art Walk – Downtown LA

A walk down a not so beaten path. Or should I say an unfamiliar path for my camera. The land of f/1.4 has been unknown by my camera until this night! Linhbergh, his cousin Grady, Lauren and I drop down the elevator and step outside a block to stroll the now famous Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk. So famous that the starving hipsters are tweeting about the “douchebags” crowding the streets. Don’t worry I won’t be tapping your PBR reserves, and besides life is too short to not drink Guinness and wear sperm count-reducing skinny jeans. Sorry for the mental image.

Anyways like I said I was walking with my friends, and Grady graciously lent me his 50mm f/1.4 lens (I was using the G.I.JOE plastic 50mm 1.8 up until then) and I felt like I was using a camera for the first time! The difference between f/1.8 and f/1.4 is more than I imagined.. which gave me lens envy that Linhbergh was 2′ away from me using the blackhole inducing 50mm f/1.2. Enough nerd talk, here are a few snaps I took throughout the night.

The image above wasn’t taken on the streets of the Art Walk, instead it was taken 5 stories up in my loft. Because not only is art displayed on the Art Walk, there are also price tags attached to most items on display. This piece by Patrick Haemmerlein stopped me in my steps. I LOVE the broken collage look, mass (made of thick wood), and the fact that it’s truly a one of a kind unique piece of art. I’m sure more of his work will end up on my walls soon.

The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk is held every 2nd Thursday of every month. If you decide to make it out there, drop me a message!

Now boarding C16

Heading back to Cali, after a semi-vacation to South Carolina (I’m at a connecting flight in Dallas/FW). How cool is it my gate is C16, also known as racing fuel… I could of used some C16 for the Assault on Mt. Mitchell!! I stopped at Marion at 75 miles, 4 hours into the race. A 19mph average pace. I think I could of made it the entire 100, but I would of been taken to the ICU right after! Now I know what to expect. It’s a brutal race, next year I’ll be more prepared… But for the next week I’m hanging my bike up and lifting a few beers to my lips, Cheers!!

Calm before the climb

Got my number, bike is tuned, and my belly is full of pasta.. Now I just need a good nights sleep at Wade’s pad in Spartanburg, SC. Tomorrow is the 100 mile Assault on Mt. Mitchell. Bring the pain!
